Skin Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment

Early detection and appropriate treatment of skin cancer can be life saving. At The Invercargill Skin Centre, skin cancer diagnosis and treatment is a core focus of our practice.

We provide thorough assessment, clear diagnosis and evidence-based management for patients with concerning skin lesions, offering continuity of care from initial assessment through to treatment and follow-up.

What skin cancer diagnosis involves

If a lesion is concerning, assessment may include:

  • Clinical examination using dermatoscopy

  • Review of personal and family history

  • Discussion of changes you’ve noticed over time

Where required, further investigation may include:

  • Biopsy to confirm diagnosis

  • Planning appropriate treatment based on results

You’ll be kept informed at every step, with clear explanations of findings and next steps.

Treatment options

Treatment is tailored to the individual and the type of lesion identified. This may include:

  • Surgical excision of skin cancers or pre-cancerous lesions

  • Ongoing monitoring for changes or recurrence

  • Coordinated follow-up care where required

Minor surgical procedures are performed onsite where appropriate, using medical best practice with careful attention to comfort, safety and wound care.

FAQs

  • No referral is required. You can book an appointment directly with The Invercargill Skin Centre.

  • We aim to provide a safe and comfortable environment so that you can feel confident knowing that your skin will be checked thoroughly whilst maintaining modesty.

For a Full Body Skin Check, you will be asked to undress to your underwear. A modesty blanket will be provided.

A Full Body Skin Check does typically involve examination of the breasts; however, this can usually be done without having to remove the bra. If you prefer that breast examination is not included in the examination, then you will have an opportunity to communicate this to the doctor during your skin check. The doctor will always obtain verbal consent from you before this part of the examination, and care will be taken to ensure that your modesty is maintained throughout.

Skin underneath underwear is not routinely examined as part of a skin check; however you will be asked if you have any concerns about your skin in this area, and if you do have any concerns then this can be examined as required.

  • No. Skin cancers can vary in appearance and may present as new lesions, sores that don’t heal, or changes to existing moles or spots. Not all concerning lesions are skin cancer, which is why medical assessment is important.

  • Cryotherapy is a simple, non-surgical way to treat some types of skin lesions.
