Surgical background across multiple specialties
Dr Sophie Sharpe is a vocationally registered General Practitioner based in Invercargill, with a strong clinical focus on skin cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Her medical career began with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Otago, followed by graduating Doctor of Medicine with Honours from the University of Sydney. She then spent several years gaining broad surgical experience across General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT (including head and neck cancer reconstruction), Vascular, Urology and Orthopaedics.
After supporting friends and family through their own skin cancer diagnoses, Dr Sophie developed a strong desire to help others facing similar challenges and to contribute to skin cancer prevention within the community. Following a foot injury and surgery in 2020, she transitioned into General Practice, bringing her surgical skillset with her, which allowed her to pursue advanced training in skin cancer medicine.
Dr Sophie holds formal qualifications in skin cancer medicine and dermatoscopy through Bond University and HealthCert, and is a member of NZ Skin Cancer Doctors and the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. She also participates in the WellSouth GP Skin Cancer Excision Programme.
While completing her GP training in Invercargill, Dr Sophie continued performing minor surgical procedures for the General Surgery Department at Southland Hospital. Establishing The Invercargill Skin Centre, the city’s first dedicated skin-focused medical clinic, reflects her commitment to improving local access to specialist skin care.
Outside of medicine, Dr Sophie enjoys exploring Southland, Fiordland and beyond with her family.
